We have successfully rehabilitated and released a young stoat after the animal was caught by a cat.

The stoat, who the team named Sebastian, was found in Earlston, Berwickshire when he was only three weeks old and weighed just 260g.

The decision was then made to bring him to the charity’s National Wildlife Rescue Centre for dedicated care and he arrived at the centre on 10 May.

Centre assistant manager, April Dodds, said, “We don’t get many stoats coming into our care. Sebastian is the only stoat we’ve admitted since 2021, and only the fourth in the last four years.

“He thrived in our care and was soon moved outside to a specialist aviary where he could learn natural behaviours. Sebastian was then released on 25 July when he was 12 weeks old. This is the age when young stoats would naturally disperse and leave their mother.
