{"id":3813,"date":"2023-08-15T09:29:08","date_gmt":"2023-08-15T09:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scottishspca.org\/news-our-weirdest-donations-0\/"},"modified":"2025-01-15T11:07:25","modified_gmt":"2025-01-15T11:07:25","slug":"our-weirdest-donations-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottishspca.org\/news\/our-weirdest-donations-0\/","title":{"rendered":"Our weirdest donations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"paragraph-4759\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--content-with-summary paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-content-with-summary field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">A bag of pants and a collection of dog hair a member of the public had brushed off their dog are just some of the strange items that have been donated to our&nbsp;centres over the past few years.<\/p>\n<p>We are revealing some of our weirdest and wackiest donations as we&nbsp;urge members of the public to check which items they can accept before they donate.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Scottish SPCA operations lead, Rachael Maclean, said, \u201cOf course we are always incredibly thankful for donations people can spare and we wouldn\u2019t want anyone to think we are ungrateful.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we do get lots of funny donations that have clearly been given to us with the best of intentions we have also received some items that pose a serious health hazard.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur centres have received open bags of food containing maggots, which is why we can\u2019t accept any food that is already open.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve also received items covered in pet hair, urine and faeces.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople often donate duvets and pillows not realising that we can\u2019t use them as bedding as they\u2019re too easy for animals to rip up and possibly harm themselves by ingesting or becoming tangled in them.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also receive a lot of cages for small animals and rabbits that unfortunately don\u2019t meet our minimum requirements and aren\u2019t big enough for us to use.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadly all these unsuitable items have to be disposed of using skips and these cost us a lot to hire and empty. We know the people who are kind enough to donate to us are trying to help and would probably be horrified if they knew they were actually costing us money.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want to put anyone off donating to our centres but we would just ask that they check which items we can and can\u2019t accept.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the item is large or something unusual we\u2019d ask them just to give their nearest centre a call first to make sure they can accept it.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are so grateful, especially in these difficult times, that people think of us and want to help.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Anyone wishing to check if items can be donated to one of the Scottish SPCA\u2019s animal rescue and rehoming centres can call 03000 999 999 to speak to their local centre.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A bag of pants and a collection of dog hair a member of the public had brushed off their dog are just some of the strange items that have been donated to our&nbsp;centres over the past few years.
