{"id":3771,"date":"2023-09-19T09:44:48","date_gmt":"2023-09-19T09:44:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scottishspca.org\/news-appeal-for-information-after-illegal-snares-found-in-dundee\/"},"modified":"2025-01-15T11:07:04","modified_gmt":"2025-01-15T11:07:04","slug":"appeal-for-information-after-illegal-snares-found-in-dundee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottishspca.org\/news\/appeal-for-information-after-illegal-snares-found-in-dundee\/","title":{"rendered":"Appeal for information after illegal snares found in Dundee"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"paragraph-4866\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--content-with-summary paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-content-with-summary field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">We are&nbsp;appealing for information after five illegal wire snares were found around the perimeter fence of Braeview Academy, Berwick Drive, Dundee on 2 September.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, no animals were trapped in the snares when they were discovered by a member of the public at around 9pm at night.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Scottish Government announced in August that they plan to seek the public\u2019s views on whether an outright ban on snares should be put in place in Scotland.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>A Scottish SPCA special investigations unit inspector, who cannot be named due to undercover operations, said, \u201cAlthough the Scottish SPCA are calling for a complete ban on the use of snares, they are still legal to catch certain wildlife if restrictions are adhered to.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was not the case with these homemade snares. The snares did not have a \u2018stop\u2019, a mechanism that prevents the device from tightening after a certain point. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were made with very thin wire, which would do massive damage to any animal unlucky enough to become caught in it.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSnares are also legally required to have an identification tag but this was also absent.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSnares do not discriminate and can cause both wildlife and domestic animals a great amount of unnecessary suffering.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is illegal for anyone to tamper with a legally set snare or trap so we would ask the public not to attempt this.
