{"id":3610,"date":"2024-09-05T10:08:04","date_gmt":"2024-09-05T10:08:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.scottishspca.org\/news-kittens-with-rare-fever-coat-phenomenon\/"},"modified":"2025-01-15T11:05:45","modified_gmt":"2025-01-15T11:05:45","slug":"kittens-with-rare-fever-coat-phenomenon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.scottishspca.org\/news\/kittens-with-rare-fever-coat-phenomenon\/","title":{"rendered":"Kittens with rare fever coat phenomenon"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"paragraph-5904\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--content-with-summary paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-content-with-summary field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item\">\n<h2 class=\"h3\">SCOTLAND\u2019S rarest kittens are looking for their forever home.\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>The six young cats have been born with an extremely rare condition called Fever Coat which will see their coats go from fifty shades of grey to fifty shades darker over time.<\/p>\n<p>Scottish SPCA senior vet Jo Neilson who has cared for the 8-week-old kittens, says: \u201cThis is a very rare occurrence and something I have never seen affect a whole litter before.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe colour change can take months and can be quite a shock for people who think they\u2019ve rehoming a \u201crare colour\u201d which then a couple of months later sees their kitten transform into a black cat! \u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fever coat occurs when a pregnant cat develops a fever due to infection, illness or stress, which affects the temperature-sensitive black pigment production in the developing kittens.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The kittens are then born much lighter in colour at the tips of their fur giving them a distinctive frosted look.<\/p>\n<article class=\"align-center media media--type-image media--view-mode-full\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__label visually-hidden\">Image<\/div>\n<div class=\"field__item\">  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/full_content\/public\/2024-09\/fever%20coat%20kitten%203.jpg?itok=IJVc43sz\" width=\"847\" height=\"635\" alt=\"fever coat kitten\" typeof=\"foaf:Image\" class=\"img-fluid\" \/><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p>Jo says; \u201cThere is no one infection that causes Fever Coat, it can be caused by anything that results in a significant increase in the mum\u2019s body temperature which could be any kind of infection or could actually just be due to extreme stress.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it doesn\u2019t happen in all cases where the mum gets an infection during pregnancy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s so rare the exact cause is not fully understood but it probably only occurs if the fever hits at a particular stage of the pregnancy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt doesn\u2019t harm the kittens at all and these six are happy healthy and looking for their forever homes with a loving family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The six kittens came into the centre with their mother after they were found living in unsuitable living conditions.<\/p>\n<p>If you or someone you know would like to give these kittens their forever home, please visit our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishspca.org\/rehome\/rehome-0?type[27]=27&amp;location[941]=941\">website<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SCOTLAND\u2019S rarest kittens are looking for their forever home.\u00a0 The six young cats have been born with an extremely rare condition called Fever Coat which will see their coats go from fifty shades of grey to fifty shades darker over time.
